Carpet has long been used a practically and some times decorative floor covering. Traditionally carpet would have been weaved by hand, which was an extremely painstaking and time consuming process. In some parts of the world carpet is still manufactured by hand using traditional techniques. Turkish carpets are still made by hand even today and the finest and most intricate examples of a Turkish carpet can sell for a high price. A Turkish carpet is a very popular souvenir for tourists who have visited the country.

Today, particularly in the Western world it is extremely common to see wall to wall fitted carpets in peoples homes, although throw down rugs and carpets are still common too. Synthetic materials are frequently used to manufacture inexpensive carpets, however this are not particularly popular for people’s homes. Wool is a very popular material to make carpets from and a high quality woollen carpet can be quite expensive.

Carpet can be purchased from a number of different shops. There are a huge number of specialist carpet shops which will sell carpet and other types of flooring. Most shops that sell furniture and other items for home interiors will also sell carpet too. Carpet in shops is typically sold by the square metre. Some of these shops that sell carpet will also be able to provide their customers with a fitting service for a fee. However, some people who are able to prefer to fit their own carpet as it can save a great deal of money on fitting costs.
