Welsh slate is a very popular building material as it is widely regarded by many people to be amongst the most durable and hard wearing varieties of slate available. It can be used for a number of different applications, although the vast majority of Welsh slate will end up being used as roofing. However, it is also has many other uses and it is not uncommon to see slate flooring, paving and wall coverings. It is some frequently used as exterior cladding on many buildings, particularly in the areas where it is sourced from.
There are a number of quarries in Wales that were created specifically for recovering welsh slate. Many of these quarries export their product all over the world and there is a great demand for this extremely high quality welsh slate in many far flung countries. However, slate is not always quarried. A great deal of slate and particularly Welsh slate is actually sourced from mines rather than quarries.
The slate industry has existed for many years in Wales and it has been a vital part of the national economy since the first discovery of slate deposits in Wales by the Romans. Although the Welsh slate industry has declined somewhat since its heyday it is still going strong and there are many specialist slate companies still quarrying in Wales. A great deal of Welsh slate is sourced from quarries located in an around North Wales, particularly in the island of Anglesey.
